Hudson River
Description -
The Hudson River is a major United States waterway. New York City's harbor lies at its mouth. In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson became the very first European to sail up the river, which was later named after him.
The Hudson is wide and flows through a beautiful valley. It is often called America's Rhine because sections of its beautiful shores resemble the Rhine River in Germany.
The Hudson is 306 miles (492 kilometers) long and lies almost entirely in
the state of New York. For about 25 miles (40 kilometers), the river forms a
boundary with New Jersey. The Hudson begins in the Adirondack Mountains,
4,313 feet (1,315 meters) above sea level. From there, the river flows
southward near the eastern boundary of New York and empties into the
Atlantic Ocean at New York City. The Hudson passes through Albany, New York,
the capital of the state, and through some of the state's other most
populated areas.
